Our Take

The screen goes virtual. High throughput screening was the industrial heart of drug discovery for thirty years: robots, 384- and 1536-well plates and libraries of a few million compounds. That physical machine is now mature, and the value is moving from robots to algorithms, as AI searches billions of virtual compounds before a plate is touched. The market grows from $8,600.0 million in 2026 to $12,300.0 million in 2031, at 7.4% a year.

Market Size 2026: USD $8,600M Market Size 2031: USD $12,300M CAGR: 7.4%

Situation Analysis: what is really happening

  • The screen goes virtual. In Silico & AI Virtual Screening rises from 5.5% to 8.7% of the market at 17.7% a year, the fastest technology. NVIDIA and Lilly opened a co-innovation AI lab and Isomorphic Labs raised about $2.1 billion.
  • From robots to algorithms. Software & AI is the fastest-growing product line at 16.3% a year, rising from 7.6% to 11.3% of the market, while Detection Instruments grow only 4.8% a year.
  • Smaller and smarter. Ultra-Miniaturised & Microfluidic screening grows 12.0% a year as DNA-encoded libraries pool billions of compounds in one tube.
  • Big pharma bets on AI. Takeda signed an AI discovery deal with Iambic worth more than $1.7 billion and Thermo Fisher partnered with OpenAI.
  • The CROs reshape. CROs & Screening Service Providers grow 9.1% a year, while Charles River sold European discovery sites to IQVIA and Evotec restructured.
  • China leads growth. China is the fastest-growing country at 14.0% a year.
