Our Take
Every molecular test starts with a sample. Before a PCR instrument or sequencer can read it, the nucleic acid has to be collected, stabilised, extracted and prepared, and that work is moving from manual columns to automated magnetic beads, and in some workflows is being skipped altogether. Library preparation is the largest product line, and liquid biopsy is pulling demand toward blood and cfDNA. The market grows from $6,150.0 million in 2026 to $8,150.0 million in 2031, at 5.8% a year.

Market Size 2026: USD $6,150.0M Market Size 2031: USD $8,150.0M CAGR: 5.8%
Situation Analysis: what is really happening
- Beads win, columns fade. Magnetic Bead methods grow 7.0% a year and rise from 55.0% to 58.3% of the market as laboratories automate, while Silica Column & Membrane grows 0.8% a year and falls from 19.6% to 15.4%.
- Skipping the step. Direct & Extraction-Free methods are the fastest-growing technology at 15.2% a year, from 6.0% to 9.2% of the market, as direct PCR and library preparation on the sequencer remove steps.
- Liquid biopsy pulls the sample. Oncology & Liquid Biopsy is the fastest-growing application at 9.9% a year, rising from 19.0% to 23.0%, and Blood, Plasma & cfDNA grows 8.5% a year.
- Library prep leads. NGS Library Preparation is the largest product line, rising from 37.1% to 39.0% of the market, while Automated Extraction Instruments grow 3.1% a year as the installed base matures.
- Clinical laboratories are the core. Hospital & Reference Labs grow 6.9% a year to 49.6% of the market, while Academic & Government Research grows 3.2%.
- New owners and falling prices. EQT agreed a business combination with QIAGEN, Waters completed its combination with BD Biosciences & Diagnostic Solutions, and Kehua Bio reported a third year of losses as Chinese molecular prices fell. China is the fastest-growing country, at $739.3 million in 2026 and 10.6% a year.
