Our Take

Synthetic oligonucleotides are becoming a medicines business. Oligonucleotide drugs are reaching large patient populations, large pharma is paying billions for oligo platforms, and contract manufacturers are adding capacity as fast as they can while BIOSECURE pushes drug developers to spread their supply. The market grows from $4,380 million in 2026 to $8,100 million in 2031, at 13.1% a year. Therapeutics overtakes Research as the largest application, and custom, RNA and long oligos gain share.

Medicines overtake research: synthetic oligonucleotides market by application, 2026 vs 2031

Market Size 2026: USD $4.38B Market Size 2031: USD $8.1B CAGR: 13.1%

Situation Analysis: what is really happening

  • Oligo medicines reach large markets. The FDA approved Ionis's Tryngolza for severe hypertriglyceridemia, and Alnylam's Amvuttra sales rose 106% in the second quarter of 2026.
  • Large pharma pays for platforms. Novartis completed its roughly $12 billion purchase of Avidity Biosciences in February 2026.
  • CDMOs race to add capacity. WuXi TIDES grew first-half revenue 44.3%, Bachem expects 35% to 40% growth, and Agilent and ST Pharm are adding plants.
  • BIOSECURE is now law. The Act was enacted in December 2025, and Western drug developers are spreading their supply across more manufacturers.
  • Long DNA and new synthesis methods advance. Twist reported record revenue, Ansa is scaling enzymatic synthesis of long DNA, and DNA data storage is the fastest growing application.
  • RNA gains ground. RNA oligos grow 17.5% a year, from 16.5% to 20.0% of the market, as primers lose share.
