Our Take

Human gene sequencing is now a clinical business. Cancer and prenatal laboratories are growing at rates rarely seen in diagnostics, large buyers are consolidating the industry, and the main risk has moved from the FDA to Medicare. The market grows from $13,450 million in 2026 to $30,100 million in 2031, at 17.5% a year. Long reads nearly double their share, but routine whole genome sequencing of healthy people is still at least five years away.

Market Size 2026: USD $13.45B Market Size 2031: USD $30.1B CAGR: 17.5%

Situation Analysis: what is really happening

  • Clinical labs are growing fast. Natera, Guardant, Caris and BillionToOne reported growth of 38% to 64% in the second quarter of 2026.
  • Large buyers are consolidating. Abbott completed its roughly $21 billion purchase of Exact Sciences, Tempus agreed to buy Personalis for about $1.5 billion, and EQT made an offer to take Qiagen private.
  • Regulators approve larger tests. The FDA approved Guardant360 Liquid CDx, and an FDA panel voted in favour of Grail's Galleri multi-cancer test.
  • Medicare is the main risk. CMS's preliminary 2027 rates cut genomic sequencing codes by about 23% before a 15% annual cap.
  • Long reads double their share. Long-read sequencing grows 32.3% a year, from 10.5% to 19% of the market.
  • Clinical labs take the lead. Clinical laboratories and hospitals rise from 40.5% to 47.5% of spending, and oncology adds the most new dollars.

Company Analysis: who is positioned, who is exposed

  • Illumina: Keeps the largest installed base and raised its 2026 guidance on clinical demand.
  • Element, Ultima, Roche, PacBio and Oxford Nanopore: New short-read and long-read platforms push down the cost per sample.
  • Natera, Guardant and Caris: Fast-growing oncology and prenatal laboratories.
  • Abbott (Exact Sciences) and Tempus: Buyers consolidating cancer testing.
  • Myriad and GeneDx: Show how payer pressure can cut price per test faster than volume grows.
