Our Take

Digital PCR counts molecules instead of estimating them, and that precision is taking the technology out of the research laboratory and into regulated work: release testing for cell and gene therapies, molecular residual disease, transplant monitoring and cleared diagnostic tests. Competition is moving from partition counts to workflow, validated assay menus and regulatory status. The market grows from $700.0 million in 2026 to $1,179.5 million in 2031, at 11.0% a year, and by 2031 regulated uses make up 48.0% of it.

Situation Analysis: what is really happening

  • Research slows. Life Science Research is still the largest application at 33.0% of the market, but grows only 7.0% a year as academic funding weakens, falling to 27.5% by 2031.
  • Biopharma QC and oncology lead. Cell & Gene Therapy & Biopharma QC grows 15.1% a year and Oncology & Liquid Biopsy 13.9%; together they add 59% of all growth.
  • From research use only to GMP and IVD. Cleared/Certified IVD products grow 19.5% a year and GMP & Biopharma QC 16.7%, while Research Use Only falls from 62.0% to 52.0% of the market.
  • Kits pull through. Assays & Kits are the fastest-growing product line at 16.1% a year, while Instruments grow 7.4% as the installed base matures.
  • New formats gain. Chip & Other systems grow 20.0% a year, from 10.5% to 15.5% of the market, and Nanoplate & Microchamber Arrays rise from 33.5% to 37.0%.
  • New owners. Bio-Rad completed its acquisition of Stilla Technologies, Roche acquired SAGA Diagnostics, ARCHIMED completed its purchase of Biomark, and QIAGEN agreed to be taken private by EQT. China is the second-largest country market, at $91.2 million in 2026.
