Our Take

Every genomic test ends with an interpretation. The software, data and services that turn raw sequence reads into a signed clinical report grow far faster than sequencing itself, because test volumes rise, panels become exomes and genomes, and the costly step moves from the sequencer to the scientist reviewing variants. AI is joining that work, and interpretation is moving to the cloud. The market grows from $980.0 million in 2026 to $1,850.0 million in 2031, at 13.6% a year.

AI joins the interpretation: clinical genomic interpretation market by technology, 2026–2031

Market Size 2026: USD $980.0M Market Size 2031: USD $1,850.0M CAGR: 13.6%

Situation Analysis: what is really happening

  • AI joins the interpretation. Generative AI & Large Language Models are the fastest-growing line at 42.6% a year, from 4.0% to 12.5% of the market, and Machine Learning Classifiers grow 17.6%, while Rules-Based & Curated Knowledge remains the foundation at 39.5% of the market in 2031.
  • Interpretation moves to the cloud. Cloud / SaaS grows 17.4% a year, from 44.0% to 52.0% of the market, while On-Premise & Instrument-Embedded software grows 5.8% and falls from 27.0% to 19.0%.
  • Interpretation software leads. Variant Interpretation & Clinical Decision Software is the largest product line, rising from 34.0% to 36.0% of the market, and Genomic Data Platforms & Cloud is the fastest-growing at 15.8%, while Secondary Analysis & Pipelines grows 10.2% as analysis is bundled with sequencers or given away.
  • Oncology is the core. Oncology & Tumour Profiling is 47.0% of the market in 2026, and Pharmacogenomics is the fastest-growing application at 15.4% a year.
  • Hospitals bring interpretation in house. Hospital & Health System Labs grow 14.9% a year to 35.0% of the market, while Reference & Commercial Genomic Labs grow 11.3% as the largest laboratories build their own tools.
  • New owners and new tools. EQT agreed a business combination with QIAGEN, Illumina launched its BioInsight platform and DRAGEN Ultra, GeneDx acquired Fabric Genomics, SeqOne agreed to acquire Congenica, and BGI-Research and Zhejiang Lab open-sourced the Genos genomic foundation model. China is the fastest-growing country, at $70.3 million in 2026 and 20.7% a year.
