Our Take
Cancer gene panels are getting bigger and moving into blood. The market grows from $6.54 billion in 2026 to $11.5 billion in 2031, at 11.9% a year. Comprehensive genomic profiling takes most of the new spending, blood-based panels catch up with tissue, and MRD monitoring and screening are the fastest-growing uses, while small hotspot panels stall.

Market Size 2026: USD $6.54B Market Size 2031: USD $11.5B CAGR: 11.9%
Situation Analysis: what is really happening
- Comprehensive profiling takes over. Comprehensive genomic profiling grows 17.2% a year from $2,518 million to $5,578 million, rising from 38.5% to 48.5% of the market and taking 62% of new spending. Hotspot panels grow only 2.6% a year.
- Blood catches up with tissue. Blood-based panels grow 19.6% a year from $1,995 million to $4,888 million and take 58% of new spending; their share rises from 30.5% to 42.5%. The FDA approved a next-generation Guardant360 Liquid CDx in May 2026.
- Monitoring and screening grow fastest. MRD & Monitoring grows 21.1% a year to $2,128 million and Screening & Early Detection 23.4% a year to $748 million. Therapy Selection & CDx remains the largest use at $2,387 million in 2026.
- Kits challenge central laboratories. Medicare set a national payment of $2,989.55 for Illumina's TruSight Oncology Comprehensive kit, and Illumina and Labcorp expanded their collaboration on distributed CGP. Clinical Laboratories still reach 77.5% of the market in 2031.
- Germline panels for more patients. NCCN now recommends multigene germline panel testing for all colorectal, endometrial and gastric cancer patients. Hereditary Risk & Germline is worth $1,472 million in 2026.
- Lung leads; prostate and China grow fastest. Lung is the largest cancer type at $1,602 million and prostate grows fastest at 15.0% a year. China grows 14.4% a year from $573 million to $1,122 million, while the USA reaches 43.3% of the market.
